Jhalawar, India: At least four children were killed and 17 others injured after the roof of a government school building collapsed in India’s western state of Rajasthan on Friday, local media reported.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with several more students feared trapped under the debris.
The incident occurred in Jhalawar district while classes were in session. Video footage aired by local news channels showed frantic scenes at the site, where residents and rescue teams were seen using cranes and other equipment to remove rubble.
According to local police officer Amit Kumar, some of the injured students are in critical condition. The 17 injured have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where visuals show medical teams attending to the children as worried family members gather outside.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed grief over the tragedy in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “heart-wrenching” incident. “Instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured children,” he wrote.
Authorities have yet to confirm the total number of children who may still be trapped. A rescue operation involving emergency responders and local volunteers is underway.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear. An investigation has been ordered to determine whether structural negligence or poor maintenance led to the tragedy.
