Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday expressed concern over the growing threat of sand and dust storms, describing them as a serious hazard to the environment, economy, and public health.

In his message on the occasion of the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms, Shah emphasized that unsustainable land and water use have significantly contributed to the rise in such storms. He called for global cooperation to effectively address and prevent their increasing intensity.

He said the Sindh government is taking concrete measures to combat environmental pollution and is fully committed to implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He added that raising public awareness about environmental challenges is the need of the hour.

“Sand and dust storms impact vital aspects of life, including food security, water availability, health, and employment,” Shah noted, adding that human activities are a major contributing factor to their worsening frequency and scale.

The Chief Minister further stated that the PPP-led provincial government is taking emergency steps to restore ecosystems and mitigate environmental degradation.
