Kutahya: Archaeologists uncovered remnants of cosmetic products, including jewellery items and makeup materials, used by Roman women more than 2,000 years ago in the ancient city of Aizanoi in western Türkiye.

Aizanoi is renowned for its well-preserved Temple of Zeus in Anatolia, listed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Tentative List in 2012.

Dumlupinar University Archaeologist Gokhan Coskun said the majority of the work took place in the agora (marketplace) to the east of the Temple of Zeus and his team reached the 2,000-year-old shops in the marketplace.

During the excavations, the team discovered various inscriptions providing insights into the establishment and operation of the ancient shops, shedding light on the city’s commercial and social structure, revealed Head of Excavation Coskun.

We came to the conclusion that the location we completely discovered was a store that sold cosmetics, including jewellery, makeup and perfumes, stated Gokhan.

During the excavation, we found a lot of perfume bottles and jewellery pieces. Among them are numerous beads from items used by women, such as hairpins and necklaces, further added Coskun. AA/APP
