Roadside-Rescued Transgender Dies In Abbottabad Hospital

News Desk

Abbottabad: A transgender individual, identified as Maryam alias Dulha, who was rescued in an unconscious condition from a roadside earlier this week, passed away at Ayub Teaching Hospital despite intensive medical care, officials said on Thursday.

Rescue 1122 personnel had found the victim lying unconscious on the roadside and shifted her to Ayub Medical Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment. According to hospital authorities, doctors and nurses provided immediate care, after which she was moved to Medical Ward-D under the supervision of Deputy Director Dr. Ilyas Khan for further management.

Media & PR Head Malik Saif documented the case and shared the patient’s photograph on social media to help trace family members or members of the transgender community. Hospital Director Dr. Sajjad Ahmed Afridi and Medical Director Dr. Saqib Malik also directed staff to ensure all necessary facilities.

Dr. Haider Zaman, Head of Medical Ward-D, and his team continued care throughout the night. Officials from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s focal person Yar Muhammad Khan Niazi also monitored the case closely.

Hospital sources said the patient’s condition deteriorated on Thursday afternoon due to cardiac complications, after which she was shifted to the CCU. Despite efforts by the medical team, Maryam later succumbed to natural causes.

Following her death, Deputy Director Dr. Ilyas Khan and PR Head Malik Saif began efforts to trace legal heirs and coordinate funeral arrangements. Umeed Welfare Trust contacted the hospital administration and offered assistance, noting that the trust maintains a designated burial space for transgender individuals.

After consultations among the hospital administration, the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, TMA authorities and the trust, preliminary burial arrangements were finalized.

The district president of the Transgender Union, Rani, and other office-bearers arrived at the hospital while a postmortem was being conducted by Dr. Nawaz. In the presence of police officials, hospital representatives informed them that if no legal heir emerged by 9 am Friday, the burial would be carried out by Umeed Welfare Trust in Nowshera.

Transgender Union representatives agreed with the plan and, in video-recorded statements, said they did not hold anyone responsible for the death, terming it a natural demise.
