Riyadh Denounces Israeli Assault on Tehran, Urges UN Action

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has issued a forceful condemnation of Israel’s recent airstrikes on the Iranian capital, Tehran, labeling the attacks a “blatant violation” of international law and a grave threat to regional peace and stability.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kingdom denounced what it described as “Israeli aggressions against the brotherly Islamic Republic of Iran,” asserting that the strikes undermine Iran’s sovereignty and violate globally recognized legal norms.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia strongly condemns and denounces the blatant Israeli aggressions, which constitute a clear violation of international laws and norms,” the statement read. It further urged the United Nations Security Council and the international community to intervene immediately to prevent further escalation. “The international community and the Security Council bear a great responsibility to immediately halt this aggression,” it added.
The rare public rebuke from Riyadh followed a series of deadly Israeli airstrikes early Thursday that targeted strategic locations in Tehran. The assault reportedly killed several high-profile Iranian figures, including Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Hossein Salami, and nuclear scientists Dr. Mohammad Mahdi Tehranchi and Dr. Fereydoon Abbasi. The strikes have triggered widespread alarm across the region, with Iran accusing both Israel and the United States of orchestrating the attack. Although U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged prior knowledge of the operation, he denied any direct American involvement. Iranian officials, however, maintain that the scale and precision of the strike suggest U.S. complicity, calling Washington equally accountable for what they describe as an act of aggression.
Citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran’s Foreign Ministry declared the country’s “legal and legitimate right to respond,” warning of consequences for both Israel and its allies.
President Trump has since ordered US Central Command (CENTCOM) to remain on high alert, citing the risk of retaliation. “The United States remains fully committed to Israel’s security,” he affirmed during a press briefing.
Saudi Arabia’s condemnation is viewed as a notable regional development, particularly in light of recent backchannel diplomatic engagements by Riyadh with both Tel Aviv and Tehran aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Gulf. Observers suggest the Kingdom’s public denunciation could signal a recalibration of its balancing strategy in the region as hostilities intensify.
The airstrikes and subsequent fallout mark a dangerous new chapter in Middle East geopolitics, raising fears of a broader conflict unless urgent diplomatic intervention is pursued.
