Rice Rain Sparks Outrage in Spain

Islamabad: Cameras caught a Spanish wedding scene where two guests were seen literally “shoveling rice” over the newly wed couple outside the church.
What started as a tender gesture, quickly escalated into chaos. Instead of soft tosses, the couple was stormed with confetti cannon pops, shovel thrusts, and rice “poured” from boxes for more than a minute.
The bride had to hide under her veil, and the groom had to turn away to save themselves.
Rice Throwing Ritual
The ritual is deeply symbolic as it is supposed to wish the couple a fruitful, happy life. In Spain, it is a warm wedding custom, often accompanied by exchange of arras coins.
The custom is not uniquely Spanish in origin, it roots in Celtic or Roman traditions. Rice represents agricultural abundance, and showering it on couples symbolizes wishes for a good fortune, and many children.
In Greece, the guests throw rice during the couple’s first dance to wish them “growing old together.”
The Spanish term “pasando arroz”, meaning “passing rice”, refers to the ritual between bride and groom to symbolize unity and commitment.
But this incident felt more like a rice siege rather than “wishing and blessing” the couple.
Social Media Enraged
Outraged social media users called it disrespectful.
Many comments on a video shared on Instagram called it “lack of manners and class.” One user commented, “you’re supposed to throw a handful, not try to bury people, it’s a wedding not a funeral…”
People criticized the guest shoveling the rice by saying “Jealousy and Envy got the best of them.” They called it rude, extreme, and wasteful of rice. An angry user called it “wasting food in the name of silly superstition.”
A few perceived it lightly, “This is old school tradition, I personally like it,” one said. Some joked that the people doing it might be the “extreme believers” of the ritual.
Maybe, meant as a joke from some friends, the scene sparked a broader conversation; how much tradition is too much tradition? This incident shows that a small grain of rice can leave a big impact, and turn an old-custom into a social debate.
