400 Buddhist Monuments Discovered in Swabi

Islamabad: In an unprecedented excavation, as many as 400 Buddhist monuments of different categories were discovered from a single heritage site at the village Babu Dehri of Swabi district.

The discovery was made by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums (DOAM), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The excavation has been reckoned as the largest number of antiques and artefacts belonging to the Buddhist civilization. The DOAM has termed the discovery as a large quantity which is a big success in the archaeological history of the province.

Artefacts belonging to the Buddhist civilization were recovered in large numbers.

Besides the discovery of a large number of artefacts from a single location, a large stupa was also unearthed from the site which was a big feat and considered the largest discovery of the province’s history, said an official of DOAM.

Excavation at the site, he continued, was started on scientific grounds around six months earlier and the hard work of his team members resulted in making the big achievement of discovering hundreds of antiques and a stupa.

The recent excavation has been reckoned as the largest number of antiques.

He further said the department received reports about the archaeological richness of the site as illegal digging was taking place there many times and again.  The Archaeology department has now started work on preserving the site for its opening to international tourists to promote religious tourism.
