Rains Wreak Havoc in Gwadar, More Rain Forecast Today

News Desk
Islamabad: Severe rainfall wreaked havoc in Gwadar, Makran, and various regions of Balochistan, disrupting daily life and halting transportation.

The meteorological department has forecasted further rain in Gwadar today (Thursday). Following continuous rainfall for two days, large swathes of Gwadar, including Jiwani, remain submerged.

According to reports, the 30-hour downpour resulted in flooding that engulfed numerous areas.

The local administration has mobilized paramilitary forces to conduct rescue and relief efforts in the affected regions. Gwadar’s district administration has declared a state of emergency in response to the rainfall. Approximately 180 mm of rain was recorded in Gwadar district over the past 48 hours. This deluge, as reported by the Meteorological Department, amounted to around 187 mm, significantly disrupting normal life and leaving many bereaved and homeless.
Numerous residential and commercial structures collapsed under the floodwaters, while roads sustained substantial damage. The coastal highway linking Karachi and Gwadar remains impassable due to the destruction caused. Residents were compelled to evacuate to safer locations as floodwaters inundated their homes, rendering them uninhabitable.
The flooding also disrupted Gwadar’s sewage system, leading to the overflow of sewage water onto the streets. With inadequate drainage infrastructure, only a few pumps are operational to alleviate the flooding. The water supply system has been severely impacted, exacerbating the shortage of potable water. Additionally, key infrastructure like the Gwadar- Pushurkan road and several dams in Surbandan, Jiwani, and Pilleri have been washed away.
Efforts to aid those affected are underway, with approximately 280 individuals, including women and children from collapsed homes, being rescued and relocated to GDA rest houses and the China School. The Army, Navy, Gwadar Development Authority, Gwadar Port Authority, and Municipal Committee are actively involved in relief operations.
Elsewhere, Quetta and several other cities experienced rainfall and snowfall, leading to flooding in settlements and roads. The overnight precipitation disrupted electricity and gas supplies in Quetta, Ziarat, Kalat, Mastung, and Pishin.
