Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi district administration has been placed on high alert as the eighth spell of monsoon rains lashed the city, with downpours expected to continue until August 30, according to the Meteorological Department.
Water levels in Nullah Leh rose to 10 feet at Katarian and 7 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge following the showers.
On the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Provincial Minister for Housing and Urban Development Bilal Yasin contacted local officials to review the post-rain situation. He stressed that all available resources must be utilized for timely drainage, adding that the protection of citizens’ lives and property was the government’s top priority.
Following a PDMA alert, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and district administrations across Punjab were instructed to remain fully prepared.
Managing Director WASA Rawalpindi, Muhammad Saleem Ashraf, said that staff and machinery had been deployed during the downpour and that drainage operations were completed within two hours after the rain subsided.
