Rain Returns to Karachi, Hyderabad; Flood, Power Outage Fears

News Desk

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted another spell of rainfall in Karachi and Hyderabad today, providing much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave.

Monsoon showers, accompanied by strong winds and dust storms, are also likely in other regions of the country, increasing the risk of flooding in seasonal nullahs.

Karachi experienced its first monsoon downpour overnight, complete with thunder and lightning, which brought a welcome drop in temperatures. However, stagnant rainwater remains in several parts of the city. Around 350 power feeders tripped due to the weather, causing widespread and repeated electricity outages.

In Hyderabad, a tragic incident occurred when the roof of a madrassa collapsed during the rain, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to fourteen others.

In response to the situation, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited multiple locations across the city, including Defence, Clifton, South District, Governor House, Sindh Assembly, and the Supreme Court Building. He received a briefing from the municipal commissioner on drainage efforts and stormwater drain cleaning. The mayor instructed municipal staff to stay on high alert and suspended all employee leaves.

According to the Met Department, a westerly weather system has now settled over the western regions of the country, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rainfall to much of Sindh, expected to last through June 29.
