Punjab to Launch E-Bike Initiative to Curb Smog

Islamabad: Caretaker Provincial Transport and Livestock Minister Ibrahim Hasan Murad announced on Tuesday the government’s upcoming launch of electric bikes aimed at curbing smog.

He emphasized the cost-effectiveness of these e-bikes, revealing plans to provide government employees with leased electric bikes. Speaking to a state-run news channel, he highlighted the government’s initiatives to mitigate environmental damage and reduce reliance on expensive fuels.

Murad mentioned the introduction of e-bikes alongside safe city camera projects designed to detect smoke-emitting vehicles. Immediate alerts would be sent to field forces upon detection, marking a step toward fostering cleaner city environments.

“The Electric Vehicles Policy is imperative to foster a safer environment, encourage local production of e-vehicles, and incentivize their adoption, ultimately aiming to secure a significant market share,” he emphasised.

Highlighting e-bikes as zero-emission vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries, the minister projected them as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional transportation methods.

Underscoring the media’s pivotal role, he urged for awareness campaigns across private TV channels and radio stations. These campaigns would focus on energy conservation and the importance of wearing face masks during smoggy weather.

In response to inquiries, the administration initiated a stringent crackdown and announced hefty fines for traffic rule violations. Notably, approximately 33 to 34 crore vehicles faced fines for contravening traffic regulations.

The intent behind imposing fines is to dissuade the use of vehicles that contribute to pollution. This crackdown will persist until next month, he confirmed.

Furthermore, aligning with the Prime Minister’s eco-friendly measures, the Punjab government is leading by example. It aims to become the first province in the country to provide significant incentives to electric vehicle owners, solidifying its commitment to sustainable practices.
