Lahore: The Government of Punjab (GoP) has initiated plans to construct a Tourism Corridor along GT Road, stretching from Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to Wagah Border, featuring a newly expanded carpeted road, model fencing, and modern stairways, according to media reports on Saturday.
The Punjab Communication and Works Department has already commenced preliminary work on the project, which is expected to cost Rs3.28 billion.
The project was also discussed during a recent Apex Committee meeting. An initial allocation of Rs1 billion has been made for the corridor in the current fiscal year’s budget.
Construction on GT Road is underway, including the development of beautifully designed sidewalls on both sides of the road leading to Wagah Border. These walls will highlight Lahore’s rich cultural heritage, adding aesthetic and historical value to the corridor.
The corridor is expected to enhance facilities for tourists arriving in Pakistan from India. Previously, GT Road faced challenges such as poor road conditions and encroachments, which also posed security risks. The new corridor aims to address these issues while boosting tourism and cultural exchange.
