Islamabad: Social activists warned the public against professional beggars who are moving into cities to exploit people’s generosity during the holy month of Ramadan and underlined the need for social media awareness for such a societal scourge that diminishes any civilization’s image of a civilised society.

Well-known social activist Abid Beli stated that during Ramadan, there is an inflow of beggars looking to take advantage of the charitable and giving nature of the holy month. These individuals feed on the public’s enhanced feelings of sympathy. He advised community members to avoid showing sympathy for these professional panhandlers and to instead donate to recognised charities.

Beli also started a campaign against begging in an effort to rid the cities of begging businesses. He clarified the terrible feature of professional beg rackets and revealed that the begging culture is more complicated than it appears. There are organised criminal clans, akin to the mafia.

Like every year, before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, hundreds of seasonal beggars, including women and children, have started making their way into populated areas of major towns.

Aside from the bazaars, streets, traffic lights, well-known brand stores, and acupuncture parlours have turned into strongholds for professional beggars as a result of the money that tourists give them under the guise of religious sacrifices, Abid stated.

Social activist advised us to take the appropriate actions to discourage this disgusting activity which is nothing more than defrauding the society, rather than passively waiting for the authorities to end this threat. “People need to reach out to deserving families and individuals because begging is not acceptable in society,” he added.

Activist Beli told that “Through our (No Begging) social media campaigns, we are educating people about the importance of giving their donations to legitimate charity organizations which will then distribute them to deserving and needy members of their families.
