PTI’s Loss Becomes PML-N’s Gain in Punjab

News Desk

Islamabad: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has emerged as the largest political force in the Punjab Assembly after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) restored reserved seats for women and minorities, significantly boosting the party’s numerical strength in the provincial legislature.

According to official data, the PML-N’s tally in the 371-member Punjab Assembly has increased from 206 to 229 seats. This includes a jump in the number of women on reserved seats from 36 to 57, and minority seats from 5 to 7.

Other parties also benefited from the ECP’s decision. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) added one more women’s reserved seat, bringing its total to 4, while PML-Q and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) gained one additional women’s seat each, increasing their tallies to 3 and 2, respectively. The PPP also secured one minority seat.

Currently, 369 of the 371 seats in the Punjab Assembly are filled. One seat remains vacant due to a pending by-election, while an independent member has not taken oath despite the passage of a year.

Two-Thirds Majority in NA

At the federal level, the ruling coalition has formally secured a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, following the implementation of the Supreme Court’s landmark June 27 verdict and the ECP’s restoration of reserved seats.

According to figures released by the National Assembly Secretariat, the government alliance now holds 232 out of 333 occupied seats — surpassing the 224 needed for a two-thirds majority. This development allows the government to pass constitutional amendments without requiring opposition support.

PML-N has solidified its lead in the National Assembly with 123 seats, followed by the PPP with 74, and the MQM with 22. Other coalition allies include IPP (4 seats), PML-Q (5), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), National Party, and Muslim League-Zia with one seat each, as well as one independent member.

Opposition Strength

The opposition benches hold 98 seats, with the Sunni Ittehad Council comprising the largest bloc (80 seats), followed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) with 10 seats.

PTI-backed independents number 5, and one seat each is held by the Balochistan National Party (BNP), Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP).

The restoration of reserved seats marks a significant political shift, reinforcing the ruling alliance’s legislative dominance both at the federal and provincial levels.
