PTA to Monitor VPN Services Under New Framework
News Desk
Islamabad: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a re-registration initiative for Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers as part of its efforts to regulate the sector through a newly introduced class license system for data services.
Under the new framework, VPN providers must obtain class licenses from PTA, with license fees ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs300,000, according to official sources.
“This measure ensures that VPN services are registered locally through class licenses,” the sources stated. The move aims to strengthen monitoring and regulation of VPN usage nationwide.
As part of the licensing requirements, VPN providers will need to establish data centers within Pakistan and comply with local data protection laws. PTA will also gain the authority to access user data and browsing history to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
The initiative is expected to bolster cybersecurity, enabling PTA to better track and respond to potential cyberattacks.
Prior to the implementation of this decision, consultations with stakeholders were held, with the Pakistan Software Houses Association playing a key role in advocating for the registration process.
This re-registration process marks a significant step toward improving digital security and regulatory oversight of VPN services in the country.
