Dr Kayani Advocates Precautions to Mitigate Winter Heart Risks

Islamabad: Changing one’s lifestyle, eating a healthier diet, quitting smoking, and participating in sports can help prevent heart disease in the winter, said Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) Executive Director Major General (retd) Azhar Mehmood Kayani.

The media must launch awareness campaigns to educate patients and the populace about cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and its preventive means to lower the death rate from them, said Dr Kayani.

Dr Kayani said that people should maintain a healthy lifestyle and engage in exercise to prevent cardiac diseases, especially in the winter, as “laziness is the main root cause of heart ailments among youngsters.”

“To prevent potential heart illnesses, it is imperative that people of all ages get routine complete heart examinations,” he added.

Smoking, excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, diabetes, high blood pressure, a sedentary lifestyle, and obesity are all risk factors for heart attacks in Pakistan, according to ED Kayani. Heart disease is also the leading cause of death globally.

Young adults between the ages of 30 and 40 are becoming more hypertensive, which can result in a heart attack. “Everyone over the age of 40 should put together a kit with the required medications and carry it with them,” he suggested.

Dr Azhar expressed concern that many people die from heart attacks as a result of a lack of understanding, adding that it is crucial for everyone to be aware of what high blood pressure is and how to handle it when it is reached in an emergency.

Obesity alone increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases including diabetes and hypertension, which in turn raises the risk of having a heart attack.

He cautioned that unless preventative strategies are made more widely known, the burden of cardiovascular disease would continue to rise. APP
