Portable Fans Become Summer Essential for Youth in Islamabad

Islamabad: As climate change continues to reshape weather patterns worldwide, Pakistan’s federal capital is no exception.
The ongoing monsoon season has brought both moments of relief and waves of sticky humidity, leaving residents searching for quick solutions to beat the heat. Among Islamabad’s youth, one such solution has emerged as a trend: portable hand-held fans.
What was once dismissed as a novelty item has now transformed into an everyday necessity. Compact, rechargeable, and easy to carry, these mini-fans have become indispensable for students, office workers, and commuters navigating the city’s relentless summer conditions.
A Surge in Demand
Local markets across Islamabad, particularly Aabpara in Sector G-6 and Karachi Company in Sector G-9, are witnessing a surge in sales of these pocket-sized devices.
Ali Sheikh, a shopkeeper in Aabpara, said the growing popularity of portable fans lies in their affordability and convenience.
“The rising demand among youth is due to affordable prices, easy availability, and the convenience of carrying them in bags or even pockets. This business is especially profitable during the hottest and most humid months, and it’s highly recommended for this time of year,” he explained.
At Karachi Company, another shopkeeper, Zulfiqar, observed a shift in how people perceive the product.
“While these fans were once viewed as mere fashion gadgets, they are now seen as essential items. Young people especially prefer them while traveling on public transport or attending outdoor events,” he said.
Voices from the Youth
For many young people, these portable fans represent more than just comfort—they are practical tools in coping with Islamabad’s heat, humidity, and frequent power outages.
Fariha, a student at Quaid-i-Azam University, shared how the fan has become a part of her daily routine.
“It really helps when the electricity goes out during humid afternoons,” she said.
Similarly, Raina, a young media consultant working with a non-profit NGO, relies on her fan while commuting across the city.
“This portable fan is nothing less than a comforter—it’s my best companion during travel. I highly recommend it, especially for anyone who spends long hours outside,” she remarked, adding that the device is easy to use, carry, and recharge.
Small Solutions for Big Challenges
The rising popularity of portable fans underscores how citizens, particularly the younger generation, are adapting to extreme heat and irregular weather patterns driven by climate change. In a city where high humidity collides with frequent power outages, small, affordable devices like these are becoming indispensable.
For many in Islamabad, the portable fan is not just a trendy accessory—it is a symbol of resilience in the face of rising temperatures and a changing climate.
