Washington: Polling stations closed Tuesday in six US states during the highly contested election between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump, with the key battleground of Georgia among them.

Polling places also closed in Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia, marking a significant moment in a landmark contest that saw tens of millions of Americans vote early.

US networks projected Trump as the winner in Indiana and Kentucky, while Harris was declared the victor in Vermont.

As the night unfolds, the United States braces for a long wait for results, with some states possibly taking days to count all the votes. Harris is vying to become the first woman president of the United States, while Trump is aiming for a return to the White House after four years out of office.

Polls will continue to close across the country throughout the evening, until the final votes are cast in Alaska.
