Chiniot: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has destroyed thousands of kilograms of hazardous vegetables grown using sewage water in a major crackdown on unsafe food practices in Chiniot.
According to a PFA spokesperson, the operation was led by Deputy Director Operations Dr. Muhammad Qasim Raza, who oversaw the destruction of spinach and coriander crops cultivated across 24 kanals of land along the Jhang Bypass.
Dr Qasim revealed that the vegetables were intended for market sale but were being irrigated with contaminated sewage water, posing serious health risks to consumers.
“Only non-edible crops can be safely cultivated using such water,” Dr Qasim stated. “Consumption of these vegetables can result in severe health complications.”
The PFA emphasized that it has ramped up monitoring and enforcement efforts across the region to ensure safe and hygienic food reaches consumers, starting from the field to the plate.
This latest action reflects the authority’s ongoing commitment to public health and food safety, warning growers and vendors of strict consequences for violations.
