PMD Warns of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across Pakistan

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain, wind, and thundershowers across various parts of the country with occasional breaks during the coming week.

From July 22, strong monsoon currents are expected to penetrate from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal into the upper regions. 

This weather system will bring rain, wind, and thundershowers, including some heavy falls, to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Tala Gang, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Okara, Pakpattan, Kasur, Khushab, Sargodha, Bhakkar, and Mianwali from July 22-25 with occasional gaps.

Rain and thundershowers are also expected in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Rajanpur, Rahimyar Khan, and Layyah on July 23 and 24.

In Kashmir, rain and thundershowers with occasional heavy falls are anticipated from July 21 (evening) to July 27, affecting Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will experience rain, wind, and thundershowers with possible heavy falls from July 22 (evening) to July 24 in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Bajaur, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Mohmand, Khyber, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Swabi, Nowshera, Mardan, Charsadda, Hangu, Kurram, Orakzai, Waziristan, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, and Dera Ismail Khan.

In Balochistan, hot and humid conditions are expected, with rain and thundershowers in the north/eastern parts including Khuzdar, Kalat, Lasbela, Awaran, Ziarat, Zhob, Barkhan, Musa Khel, Shirani, Kohlu, Harnai, Naseerabad, and Jaffarabad on July 23 and 24.

Sindh will experience mostly hot and very humid weather, with rain and thundershowers expected in Mithi, Sanghar, Umarkot, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Larkana, and Dadu on July 23 and 24.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, partly cloudy to cloudy conditions are forecasted with rainfall expected in Diamir, Astore, Skardu, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar from July 22-27 with occasional gaps.

Possible Impacts

Flash Flooding: Heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Malakand, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Kurrum, Orakzai, Khyber, Mohmand, Nowshera, Swabi, and Kashmir on July 23 and 24.

Urban Flooding: Heavy falls could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 23 and 24.

Landslides: Vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan may experience road disruptions due to landslides during the wet period.

Authorities are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential hazards.
