PMD Issues Nationwide Heatwave Alert Across Pakistan

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday issued a countrywide heatwave alert, warning of dangerously high temperatures and urging citizens to take urgent precautionary measures.

According to the PMD advisory, most parts of the country will remain in the grip of extreme heat and dryness over the coming days, with temperatures expected to range between 45°C and 50°C during peak afternoon hours, particularly from 11am to 4pm.

In the federal capital Islamabad and its surrounding regions, scorching temperatures and dry winds are likely to persist, with no immediate chance of rainfall. Lahore and other major cities in Punjab are also forecast to experience similar conditions, with daytime temperatures potentially hitting 46°C.

The plains of Punjab are expected to face strong, dusty afternoon winds, which could worsen the already intense heat. Meanwhile, Sindh and Balochistan are bracing for even harsher conditions, particularly in the plains of Balochistan, where the mercury is likely to remain at critically high levels.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PMD has predicted intense heat in the plains, though some relief is expected in upper areas such as Chitral, Dir, and Swat, where light rainfall is likely. However, the overall weather in the region will continue to be hot and dry.

Similar hot and dry conditions are forecast for Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, with no significant rainfall expected in the coming days.

Authorities have advised the public, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and women, to avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours, stay well-hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing.

Health experts have also urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, increase fluid intake, and remain alert for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, including dizziness, fatigue, and rapid heartbeat.

As the heatwave intensifies, the PMD and health officials are closely monitoring the situation and reiterating the importance of community awareness and preparedness to minimize the risk of weather-related illnesses.
