Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert, warning of soaring temperatures across the country from April 26 to 30 due to the development of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere.

According to the PMD, the weather system will begin forming on April 26 and is expected to engulf most parts of the country by April 27, causing a significant spike in daytime temperatures.

From April 26 to May 1, southern regions—including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan—are forecasted to experience daytime temperatures 5–7°C above normal. Meanwhile, central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan will likely face temperatures 4–6°C above normal from April 27 to 30.

A respite from the heat is expected beginning May 1, with a new weather system likely to bring rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to parts of Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The PMD has advised the public—especially children, women, and the elderly—to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and stay well-hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Farmers have been urged to plan their wheat harvesting activities accordingly and take necessary steps to protect their livestock from heat stress. In addition, rising temperatures in the northern regions could accelerate snowmelt, particularly between April 27 and May 1, potentially affecting river flows.

Citizens are also encouraged to conserve water across all sectors. The PMD further warned that strong winds, dust storms, and lightning on April 30 and May 1 may pose risks to infrastructure, including electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.

Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of the upcoming heatwave.
