Islamabad: Chief Meteorologist of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Sardar Sarfaraz, has advised the public to take necessary precautions and health safety measures as a new monsoon spell is set to begin on Monday, July 22.

Speaking to a private news channel, Sarfaraz warned that the upcoming spell is expected to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, potentially leading to flash flooding, landslides, and other hazards.

He noted that instructions have been issued to district administrations to prepare for possible incidents caused by dust storms, strong winds, or thunderstorms.

The district administrations have been directed to ensure the availability of both small and large machinery to handle any emergencies.

Strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are anticipated to affect the upper regions starting July 22.

In response to concerns about urban flooding, the administrations of major cities have been advised to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

This includes ensuring that storm-water drainage systems are clear and operational, conducting regular inspections of waterways and culverts, and identifying flood-prone areas.

City officials are also urged to develop emergency response plans, stockpile essential supplies such as sandbags and water pumps, and establish communication networks to swiftly disseminate critical information to residents.

Engaging with local communities, raising awareness about flood preparedness, and providing education on evacuation procedures and flood safety tips are also crucial steps to ensure a coordinated and effective response to potential flooding events.

By taking these proactive measures, cities can reduce the risk of flooding, protect public safety, and minimize damage to infrastructure and property.
