Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his key role in finalizing what he described as a “historic” trade agreement between Pakistan and the United States.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Prime Minister wrote, “I wish to convey my profound thanks to President Trump for his leadership role in finalization of the historic U.S.-Pakistan trade agreement, successfully concluded by our two sides in Washington, last night.”
He added that the landmark deal would help deepen the growing cooperation between the two countries and expand the frontiers of an enduring bilateral partnership.
The US-Pakistan agreement, finalized after weeks of negotiations, includes collaborative efforts in trade and investment, with a major focus on developing Pakistan’s oil reserves.
Announcing the deal on his Truth Social account, President Trump said, “We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves.
We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling Oil to India someday.”
The development comes at a time when U.S.-India trade relations are facing renewed strain. The Trump administration has imposed a 25 percent tariff and an additional unspecified penalty on Indian imports, effective from August 1.
In a separate post, Trump criticized India’s trade practices, stating, “We have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high—among the highest in the world—and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country. India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 percent, plus a penalty for the above, starting on August first.”
The US-Pakistan trade breakthrough has been hailed as a win-win for both nations, particularly as Pakistan looks to revitalize its economy through foreign investment and energy development. The agreement is also expected to play a key role in strengthening strategic ties between Islamabad and Washington.
