PM Drives Regional Unity For Climate Resilience At COP29

Baku: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif seized the opportunity to advance regional climate cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations as he engaged with world leaders at the opening of the COP29 “World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit.”

Welcomed by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the prime minister arrived in Baku amid a warm reception for the high-stakes climate summit.

In an informal setting before the official proceedings, PM Shehbaz connected with several heads of state, prioritizing conversations around climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and mutual cooperation.

During his interaction with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the leaders discussed expanding climate-focused bilateral collaboration to support shared environmental goals.

PM Shehbaz and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, joined by Turkish First Lady Emine Erdogan, exchanged views on amplifying climate and environmental issues on the international stage, emphasizing the shared responsibilities of their nations.

Similarly, with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the two leaders discussed enhancing Pakistan-UK relations with a focus on climate priorities.

In discussions with Central Asian leaders, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the need for cooperative strategies to protect glaciers and water resources, vital for the region’s ecological stability and economic security.

Additionally, the prime minister addressed South Asia’s climate risks, such as rising temperatures and sea levels, in his meeting with Nepalese President Ram Chandra Poudel and Bangladeshi Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus. Together, they explored strategies for forest conservation and climate adaptation in South Asia.

The prime minister was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Climate Change Coordinator Romina Khurshid Alam, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to a unified approach in confronting the global climate crisis.
