Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combat electricity theft, reduce line losses, and enhance the power distribution system across the country.

He announced that the government had recently appointed new chairpersons and board members in five power distribution companies (DISCOs) through a transparent process, expressing hope that these appointments would lead to improved performance within the DISCOs.

During a meeting to review the affairs of the Power Ministry, the Prime Minister directed the Power Minister and Secretary of the Power Division to coordinate with provincial governments to address electricity theft, assess DISCOs’ performance, and manage other sector-related matters.

“The government must adopt a comprehensive approach to combat power theft nationwide,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

He instructed the provincial governments to ensure that the police force and Tehsildars are provided as per the needs of the DISCOs. He also called for strict action against corrupt elements within the power distribution companies, urging the concerned authorities to handle them firmly.

The Prime Minister directed the DISCOs to make the open court system more effective and responsive to public complaints.

PM Shehbaz also stressed that the steering committee formed to transition agricultural tube wells to solar energy in Balochistan should convene immediately.

The meeting was informed that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) concerning the transition of agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar energy had been issued to the Steering Committee. Additionally, a package is being prepared to recognize officers who have demonstrated outstanding performance.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Power Awais Khan Leghari, and other relevant ministry and division officials.
