Rawalpindi: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi is currently supplying only 51 million gallons of water per day against the city’s daily requirement of 70 million gallons, leading to a significant shortfall amid soaring temperatures and an ongoing heatwave.

WASA Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf said on Friday that the demand for water had surged due to the sudden rise in temperature. In response, several emergency measures were being implemented to manage the shortfall and ensure smooth water supply to residents.

The MD informed that the operating hours of tube-wells had been extended, while efforts were underway to plug water leakages across the system. He added that water distribution was being streamlined to ensure equitable supply across all areas.

“Tube-well operations are now being aligned with the electricity load-shedding schedules in affected areas to maintain water availability,” he said.

The agency has prepared a comprehensive strategy on the direction of Punjab Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering, Bilal Yasin, to ensure uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water during the peak summer months.

Saleem Ashraf also urged citizens to conserve water and adopt responsible usage practices. “We are making consumers aware of ways to conserve water in their household tanks,” he said.

Strict action is being taken against water wastage, he warned. “As per court orders, fines of Rs 10,000 are being imposed on domestic users and Rs 20,000 on commercial users found wasting water.”

The WASA chief appealed to the public to cooperate with the agency in tackling the water crisis by modifying consumption behavior and preventing misuse of water resources.
