Rawalpindi: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Punjab Chief Organizer Alia Hamza Malik has been taken into custody by Rawalpindi police along with several party workers, sparking protest among supporters.
According to PTI leader Seemabia Tahir, a total of eight party workers were detained, with five shifted to the Airport police station, while Alia Hamza has been moved to the Women’s police station. The remaining workers were taken to the Civil Lines police station.
The arrests reportedly took place during a youth convention organized by PTI in Rawalpindi. “It is our constitutional right to hold peaceful protests and conventions. We did not violate any law,” Seemabia Tahir emphasized while speaking to the media outside the police station, where a large number of PTI workers had gathered to demand the release of the detained leaders.
Earlier, in a statement, Alia Hamza condemned the arrests and criticized the authorities for what she termed as “unjustified actions” during peaceful demonstrations. “The Grand Health Alliance strongly condemns the violence and arrests during the sit-in,” she stated.
Referring to the alleged mistreatment of female protesters, she added, “The way women were disrespected on Mall Road is unprecedented. This injustice will not last long. Every single action will be held accountable. These are our people, and injustice against them will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The PTI leadership has called for the immediate release of all detained workers and demanded action against those responsible for the arrests.
