Islamabad: Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Law and Justice, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, informed the Upper House of Parliament on Friday that the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital was treating 8,000 indoor and outdoor patients.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Senator Haji Hedayat Ullah Khan regarding medical facilities in the federal capital.
Senator Tarar acknowledged that the current medical facilities in the federal capital were insufficient to meet the needs of its 2.5 million residents.
Under the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the federal government had initiated the construction of its flagship Jinnah Medical Tower project, a 1,000-bed tertiary care hospital spread over 600 kanals of land, he added.
The minister noted that the estimated cost of the project was Rs15 billion, and it was expected to be completed in three years. The hospital, with a capacity of 1,000 indoor patients, would help reduce the burden on PIMS and Poly Clinic Hospitals.
In a supplementary query, Senator Humayun Mohmand raised concerns about whether the federal government was efficiently utilizing its existing facilities, as vacancies in public hospitals were affecting service delivery.
Senator Tarar acknowledged challenges in local hospitals but assured that the federal government had addressed these issues. He also mentioned that any recommendations from members would be considered if they aligned with the framework.
“Indoor patients can only be accommodated according to the facility’s capacity. Jinnah Medical Tower is a flagship healthcare project as the population of the capital has significantly increased over the years,” Tarar stated.
