Islamabad: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), serving over 9,000 patients daily, is undergoing a significant transformation to address the growing healthcare needs of the population.
In an exclusive interview with APP, Executive Director of PIMS, Dr. Imran Sikandar, outlined a series of major reforms aimed at improving healthcare services, patient satisfaction, and staff accountability at the country’s leading public hospital.
Dr Sikandar explained that on any given day, over 9,000 patients visit PIMS, with 7,000 attending various outpatient departments (OPDs) — including pediatrics and the Mother and Child Health (MCH) center — and 2,000 seeking care at the emergency department.
Acknowledging the overwhelming demand, the Executive Director stressed a renewed focus on service quality, accountability, and operational efficiency.
One of the significant reforms introduced is a reward and punishment system to ensure better staff performance. “This new system is motivating doctors and paramedics to be more committed to their roles,” Dr. Sikandar explained. He also mentioned the implementation of biometric attendance to ensure discipline and regularity among healthcare workers.
The burn center at PIMS has seen substantial upgrades, including the activation of two previously non-functional operating theatres. In addition, plastic surgeons have been integrated into the burn unit to improve the quality of care for critical patients.
The MCH department is now fully aligned with WHO protocols, ensuring the hospital meets globally accepted standards for maternal and child healthcare.
Dr. Sikandar highlighted that all diagnostic and treatment equipment, including MRI, CT scans, and dialysis units, are now fully operational. The hospital is also adding 10 new dialysis machines, supported by external assistance.
To further enhance patient access, PIMS has introduced evening OPDs, providing working individuals and those unable to attend during regular hours with improved access to services.
The Executive Director also noted significant upgrades in patient service delivery systems, which have helped streamline processes and reduce wait times.
Dr Sikandar credited the full support of the federal government for enabling these improvements. “With continued backing, we’re confident in our ability to provide top-quality medical services to every patient who walks through our doors,” he stated.
These transformative measures signify a significant step toward making PIMS a model institution for public healthcare in Pakistan.
