Islamabad: The Director General of Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia, stated on Friday that, under the strict guidance of Chief Minister Punjab Maryum Nawaz, authorities are actively clearing and desilting all drainage channels promptly to prepare for potential pre-monsoon incidents.

Speaking to PTV news channel, he mentioned that the country is expected to experience normal to above normal rainfall with nearly normal temperatures during this monsoon season. Urban flooding alerts have been issued for all districts, and precautionary measures have been instructed to all deputy commissioners and relevant officials to prevent any loss of life, given the forecast of rain, wind, thundershowers, and isolated heavy downpours.

He warned that these rains could lead to flash floods in various parts of Punjab and emphasized that district administrations have been instructed to ensure readiness of emergency services personnel, equipment, and resources to manage any unforeseen circumstances.

Furthermore, he assured that effective response mechanisms are being prepared for natural disasters, with trained personnel poised to contribute effectively to disaster management efforts. Precautionary evacuations of communities living near natural drains and rivers are also being coordinated to minimize potential impacts.

Responding to queries, he mentioned that PDMA has alerted about potential urban flooding in cities including Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Narowal, and Rawalpindi, directing local administrations accordingly.

Authorities in flood-prone districts have been advised to clear rivers and canals, cautioning people against crossing them during rainy and flood conditions. Strict enforcement of laws prohibiting bathing in rivers and canals has also been recommended.

In preparation for potential rains, immediate drainage measures are being advocated in every city, with proactive flood risk management strategies being implemented in vulnerable areas.

Due to concerns over potential floods, daily updates are being requested from most districts, he added.

Following PDMA’s warnings of urban and flash flooding, Rescue 1122 has initiated mock exercises to enhance its flood rescue capabilities, he concluded.
