Islamabad: Hameed Ullah Malik, Director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, expressed confidence in enhancing public safety through the recent launch of a state-of-the-art flood early warning system.
This system is designed to provide timely alerts and facilitate evacuations.
In an interview with PTV News, Malik highlighted that the new system has already shown promising results, attributing its success to a participatory approach that empowers communities in disaster response efforts.
“By harnessing the power of technology and community engagement, we are revolutionizing flood management and saving lives,” he stated.
The PDMA has issued flood warnings for various mountainous areas in DG Khan division and low-lying regions of Punjab. Residents in these areas are advised to relocate to safer locations.
Malik also shared that a joint monitoring system is being updated and synchronized with all relevant departments to address flood damage effectively.
This collaborative effort aims to enhance response and mitigation measures, ensuring a swift and coordinated approach to minimize flooding impacts. The updated system will facilitate real-time monitoring, prompt decision-making, and efficient resource allocation, thus reducing the devastating effects of floods on affected communities.
Additionally, the PDMA director called on citizens to contribute to flood risk mitigation by practicing proper waste management. He urged individuals to dispose of garbage in designated bins rather than littering, which can obstruct roads and sewage systems during heavy rainfall and worsen flood damage.
“By taking this simple yet crucial step, individuals can significantly help in preventing water-logging, reducing the risk of flash flooding, and minimizing the overall impact of floods on their communities,” he added.
Malik emphasized that collective responsibility and proactive measures are vital in building resilience against natural disasters.
