Lahore: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a heat wave alert amid concerns over rising temperatures across the province.
Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, has directed all Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to remain vigilant and ensure preparedness in light of the forecasted heat wave. The alert has been extended to all relevant departments, including School Education, Health, Transport, Local Government, Rescue 1122, and other concerned authorities.
According to the PDMA, temperatures are expected to rise significantly from May 20 to May 24, with forecasts predicting an increase of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal in major cities and plains of Punjab. Some areas may also experience strong winds and thunderstorms due to the intense heat.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that, on the directives of the Chief Minister of Punjab, district administrations have been asked to take immediate precautionary measures. These include:
Ensuring availability of clean drinking water in public areas.
Providing first aid and heat stroke response facilities in hospitals and through mobile health units.
Raising public awareness via print, social, and electronic media.
Citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during peak afternoon hours, and to wear light-colored clothing, cover their heads, and stay hydrated. Special attention should be given to children and the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
In case of emergencies, the public is advised to contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 or Rescue 1122.
