Islamabad: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has predicted that India will fail to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, citing concerns over their inconsistent batting performances.

Speaking on Geo News programme “Harna Mana Hai,” Amir — a member of Pakistan’s victorious squad at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup — shared his assessment of the teams likely to progress from the Super Eights stage.

When asked to name the sides he expects to reach the last four, Amir backed South Africa and the West Indies.

“South Africa and West Indies,” he said confidently, adding that India’s batting frailties could prove costly. “If you look at all their matches — except against Pakistan — their batting collapses,” he remarked.

The left-arm pacer, who now features in various domestic and franchise leagues after stepping away from international cricket, said the pressure of the Super Eights stage would further test the Indian side.

“In the way South Africa and the West Indies are playing, they can beat any team that comes their way,” he added.

Highlighting the West Indies’ strengths, Amir praised their bowling attack, naming Gudakesh Motie, Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph as key assets. He also pointed to the power-hitting abilities of Sherfane Rutherford and Rovman Powell, saying they can put any opposition under pressure.

Explaining his confidence in South Africa, Amir said the Proteas boast a well-rounded squad. “Their fast bowling is complete, their spin department is complete, and their batting is in form,” he said.

However, other panellists on the programme disagreed with Amir’s assessment. Former captain Rashid Latif predicted a Pakistan-India clash in the semi-finals, while Ahmed Shehzad expressed confidence that India and South Africa would progress to the last four.
