Beijing: For seven years, 27-year-old Fahad Kabeer has been dedicatedly studying traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at the Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine. Situated in east China’s Jiangxi Province, this university stands as the sole institution in the region offering TCM education to international students.

Kabeer’s perception of TCM underwent a significant shift during the 2023 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Forum on Traditional Medicine. At this event, he encountered the fusion of modern technology with traditional medicine, witnessing how it could enhance TCM’s efficacy.

Engaging with a cutting-edge device, Kabeer found himself face-to-face with an ‘artificial intelligence (AI) doctor,’ resembling a capsule. By simply presenting his tongue to the device, it initiated a data analysis based on his facial and tongue images.

“This mirrors the ‘observation’ aspect of traditional Chinese medicine,” Kabeer remarked. “Additionally, my pulse data can be automatically gathered through a pulse detector. With a wealth of uploaded data, this ‘AI doctor’ aids in improved diagnosis and treatment.”

Post-prescription, the dispensation of medicines takes a mere 20 seconds through smart devices. Furthermore, an automated decoction machine efficiently prepares herbal medicines, ensuring a more scientific approach for enhanced curative effects.

Addressing concerns about the quality of medicinal materials within this ‘unmanned’ system, Zeng Ji from the Digital TCM Industry Innovation Exhibition Centre at TCM Sci-Tech Innovation City in Ganjiang New Area explained the implementation of a digital management platform for material traceability.

“Physicians’ prescribed medicinal materials are displayed in real-time on screens. Monitored statistics regarding the soil, water sources, and atmospheric environment where the herbs grow are clearly indicated. This meticulous tracking ensures stringent control over the quality and security of these materials,” stated Zeng.

Kabeer, recognising the potential of modern technology in advancing traditional medicine, emphasised the balance between efficient medical treatment and a stringent tracking system that safeguards the security of medicinal materials.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has served as a pivotal platform for promoting TCM worldwide over the years. An official from the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination acknowledged the substantial potential for collaboration between China and Pakistan in traditional medicine.

Expressing confidence in China’s progressive stance in traditional medicine education, the official anticipates an influx of Pakistani students pursuing TCM studies in China in the foreseeable future.
