Pakistani, Iraq Discuss Pilgrim Passport Policy

Islamabad: Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi met with a high-level Iraqi delegation led by Lieutenant General Dr Tahmeir Ismail, Commander of Iraq’s Rapid Response Unit, on Saturday.

During the meeting, they discussed several matters of mutual interest, including the proposal to eliminate the requirement for Pakistani pilgrims to surrender their passports upon arrival in Iraq. They also explored enhancing facilities for these pilgrims.

Other topics included the training of Iraqi police by Pakistan, cooperation on the Safe City project, and strengthening efforts to combat illegal immigration and human smuggling.

The Iraqi delegation extended an invitation to Minister Naqvi to visit Iraq.

Minister Naqvi emphasized the urgent need for action on the proposal to forgo passport collection from pilgrims and expressed hope for a swift decision by the Iraqi government.

Lieutenant General Dr. Tahmeir Ismail assured that the issue would be discussed with the Director General of Passports, expressing optimism that a resolution would be reached. He also acknowledged the respectful reception of Pakistani visitors in Iraq.

Furthermore, he noted that Pakistan is set to offer visa-free access to Iraqi citizens soon and pledged full cooperation in the training of Iraqi police and support for the Safe City project.

The Iraqi delegation included Brigadier General Aqeel Kazim, Commander of the Protection Regiment; Brigadier General Abdul Hussain; and Muhammad Suhail, among others.

Federal Secretary of Interior Khurram Ali Agha and MD NRTC Brigadier Muhammad Asim were also present.
