Pakistan & West Indies Set for Thrilling Series-Decider
News Desk
Trinidad: The stage is set for a gripping finale as Pakistan and the West Indies prepare to clash in the decisive third One Day International (ODI) at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago today.
Both teams enter this contest locked at 1-1 in the three-match series, promising a thrilling finish that cricket fans won’t want to miss.
The tension has been building ever since Pakistan clinched a narrow victory in the opening ODI, only for the West Indies to bounce back with a spirited performance in the rain-affected second match. That encounter saw the hosts overcome a challenging target under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, leveling the series with a confident five-wicket win.
The second ODI, played on 10 August, was a rollercoaster of interruptions and momentum shifts. Pakistan, batting first, posted a modest total of 171 for 7 in 37 overs. The innings was peppered with useful contributions from Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Talat, whose efforts helped stabilize the innings despite the persistent threat of rain.
West Indies’ chase got off to a shaky start as Hasan Ali struck twice early to send both openers back to the pavilion with just 12 runs on the board. Pakistan’s bowlers looked sharp as Abrar Ahmed claimed the wicket of Keacy Carty, who struggled to get going with a slow 16 runs off 42 balls. West Indies soon found themselves three wickets down for 48 runs, and the pressure mounted.
But the game changed when Roston Chase walked in at number five, joining forces with lower-order batsman Justin Greaves in a patient and steady partnership that weathered the storm. Chase, who was later named Player of the Match, scored a crucial unbeaten 49 runs off 47 balls, including four boundaries and two towering sixes that shifted the momentum. Greaves supported well, adding a gritty 26 runs from 31 deliveries.
Their partnership of 77 runs off 72 balls anchored the innings, as they steadily chipped away at the target of 181 runs, set via the DLS method for a 35-over chase. The pair showed tremendous composure, navigating the tricky pitch and conditions with maturity, and eventually sealed the victory with 10 balls to spare.
Earlier in the innings, Sherfane Rutherford dazzled briefly with a powerful spell of hitting, smashing three sixes and four fours in quick succession off Shaheen Shah Afridi and Salman Ali Agha. Yet, timely wickets from Mohammad Nawaz stemmed the flow, removing both Rutherford and captain Shai Hope, who contributed a useful 32 runs.
For Pakistan, Hasan Ali’s early strikes were the highlight of the bowling attack, while Mohammad Nawaz and Abrar Ahmed kept their figures economical. Jayden Seales led the West Indies bowling, bagging three wickets and putting the brakes on Pakistan’s innings.
The series has been a display of competitive cricket with both teams showcasing their talent and resilience. Pakistan, who triumphed in the first ODI by five wickets, will be eager to bounce back and secure the series win today. Meanwhile, the West Indies, buoyed by home advantage and a strong comeback, will look to capitalize on their momentum.
PTV Sports HD will broadcast the match live, giving cricket fans in Pakistan and around the world a chance to witness what promises to be a nail-biting conclusion to this closely fought series.
