Pakistan Takes Major Step Toward Nationwide 5G Rollout
News Desk
Islamabad: Pakistan moved a step closer to launching next-generation mobile services after telecom operators secured key spectrum in a major auction conducted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, paving the way for the country’s long-awaited 5G rollout.
The auction generated $507 million in revenue, with 480 MHz of spectrum sold across multiple frequency bands. Three major telecom companies—Jazz, Zong and Ufone, successfully acquired frequencies that will allow them to begin deploying 5G services.
Industry leaders say the new spectrum will significantly improve internet speeds, network capacity, and coverage, particularly as demand for data continues to rise across the country.
According to auction results, Jazz emerged as the largest buyer, securing 190 MHz of spectrum across the 700, 2300, 2600, and 3500 MHz bands. Ufone followed with 180 MHz, mainly in the 3500 and 2600 MHz bands, while Zong acquired 110 MHz.
Officials described the auction as a major step toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. Speaking at the announcement, Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the process was conducted transparently, with the bidding broadcast live to ensure public confidence.

She noted that the new spectrum allocation would allow telecom operators to deliver faster connectivity and improved services to millions of users, while helping Pakistan keep pace with global technological developments.
The government plans to initially launch 5G services in Islamabad and provincial capitals, before expanding coverage to other regions. Telecom companies also highlighted the importance of the 700 MHz band, which can extend high-speed connectivity to rural and underserved areas.
Industry representatives welcomed the auction, saying the available spectrum and revised terms encouraged strong participation and would benefit both consumers and the telecom sector.
Pakistan previously introduced 3G and 4G services between 2014 and 2016, and officials believe the move toward 5G will accelerate digital transformation, support emerging technologies, and strengthen the country’s growing digital economy.
