Pakistan Out of T20 World Cup After Lauderhill Washout
News Desk
Islamabad: Pakistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 came to an abrupt end due to adverse weather conditions in Lauderhill, resulting in a points split between Ireland and USA.
With USA advancing to the Super Eight alongside India from Group A, they also secured their place in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Pakistan faced a challenging tournament marked by a swift exit under gloomy skies that mirrored their disappointing campaign. They arrived in the USA without warm-up games and faced disrupted practice sessions due to rain.
This lack of preparation showed in their initial match against USA, where they lost in a Super Over, followed by a defeat to India while chasing a target of 120 runs.
Their tournament hopes rested on other match outcomes, notably the USA vs Ireland game in Lauderhill. An Irish victory would have kept Pakistan in contention, but the washout meant USA gained an insurmountable lead in the points table, sealing Pakistan’s fate.
Pakistan managed only one win, a seven-wicket victory over Canada. Despite an upcoming match against Ireland, both teams were already eliminated due to the Lauderhill result.
However, Pakistan’s current T20I ranking of seventh ensures their direct qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
This early exit marks Pakistan’s quickest departure from a T20 World Cup, having played just three matches.
Despite previous group-stage exits in 2014 and 2016, Pakistan has a strong T20 World Cup history, reaching the semi-finals or better in most tournaments, and winning the title in 2009.
