Pakistan Arrests Daesh-K Spokesperson Sultan Aziz: UN Report
News Desk
Islamabad: Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have arrested Sultan Aziz Azam, spokesperson and media wing founder of Daesh-Khorasan (Daesh-K), according to the 16th report of the United Nations (UN) Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team.
The UN report states that Azam was apprehended on May 16, 2025, by a Pakistani intelligence agency. He is credited as the founder of the terrorist group’s media wing, Al-Azaim, a key organisation for recruitment and propaganda.
Following his arrest, Daesh-K’s media activities were effectively suspended, including the shutdown of major propaganda platforms such as Voice of Khorasan, the report noted.
The report highlighted that Pakistan’s actions significantly weakened the group’s organisational structure at the global level. Several planned attacks were thwarted, the number of fighters declined, and senior commanders and ideological leaders were neutralised.
The arrests of Azam and senior leader Abu Yasir al-Turki were singled out as pivotal in reducing Daesh-K’s operational capabilities, according to the UN report.
Sources noted that Azam previously served as an adviser to the Nangarhar provincial council in Afghanistan before taking up his role in Daesh-K’s media wing.
The report also mentioned cross-border attacks in Pakistan, largely conducted by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from Afghan soil, describing the issue as posing the “greatest short-term threat” to regional stability.
