Pakistan, Afghan Taliban Agree on 48-Hour Ceasefire
News Desk
Islamabad: The governments of Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire, effective from 6 pm today (Wenesday), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced. The ceasefire, requested by the Afghan Taliban, comes after several days of heightened border tensions.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said the agreement was reached through mutual consent to allow for peaceful resolution of ongoing issues via diplomatic engagement.
“During this period, both sides will make sincere efforts to find a positive solution to this complex but solvable issue through constructive talks,” the statement added.
Recent Military Operations
The ceasefire follows successful Pakistan Army operations against Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij forces along the border.
Security sources confirmed that hideouts, posts, and tanks belonging to the militants were destroyed during operations in Spin Boldak, Chaman, Zhob, and Nushki sectors.
The Pakistan Army reported killing 15 to 20 militants in Spin Boldak after the attackers used nearby villages and civilians as human shields. In Kurram, eight enemy posts and six tanks, along with their crews, were destroyed, with 25 to 30 terrorists killed. Several American-made weapons were also seized.
Counter-Offensive Successes
Operations in the Zhob and Chaman sectors involved heavy artillery and precise targeting of Taliban positions and Khawarij shelters, resulting in significant enemy casualties. In Nushki, multiple enemy positions were neutralized, and Ghaznali post was captured after Afghan Taliban forces fled, leaving behind weapons and equipment.
The Pakistan Army also carried out precision strikes on key Taliban hideouts in Kandahar, destroying Battalion No. 4 and Border Brigade No. 6, killing dozens of Afghan and foreign operatives.
Taliban Propaganda Exposed
Security sources revealed that the Afghan Taliban circulated misleading videos claiming destruction of the Pak-Afghan Friendship Gate. Evidence confirmed the gate on Pakistan’s side remained intact, exposing the group’s propaganda efforts to conceal battlefield losses.
Ceasefire Context
Officials said the ceasefire request came after the Afghan Taliban suffered heavy losses during Pakistan Army counter-operations. Despite the ceasefire, Pakistan remains fully prepared to respond decisively to any future external aggression.
During the ceasefire period, both sides are expected to engage in constructive dialogue to achieve a lasting and peaceful solution, as Pakistan continues to safeguard its territorial integrity and national security along the border.
