Over 29M Pakistanis at Risk Due to Tobacco Use: Health Expert

Bahawalpur: Renowned health expert Dr Muhammad Akmal Madni has highlighted the alarming prevalence of tobacco use in Pakistan, with over 29 million individuals reportedly using tobacco products.

Dr Madni emphasized the grave threat this poses to public health, citing its association with various serious conditions such as lung diseases (including lung cancer), cardiovascular diseases, strokes, diabetes, and other chronic ailments.

He pointed out that extensive surveys conducted by various institutes revealed that approximately 17 million individuals in Pakistan are cigarette smokers, while an additional 12 million use alternative forms of tobacco such as hookah, tobacco paan, gutka, biree, and mainpuri.

Dr Madni expressed concern over the inclusion of some women among tobacco users and urged the public to refrain from tobacco use to safeguard their health from the onset of such debilitating diseases.
