OpenAI Unveils ‘Deep Research’ AI Tool for Advanced Online Analysis

Reuters

San Francisco: OpenAI has launched a new artificial intelligence tool, “Deep Research,” designed to conduct multi-step online research for complex tasks, the company announced on Sunday.

Powered by a specialized version of OpenAI’s upcoming o3 model, the tool is optimized for web browsing and data analysis.

Users can input a prompt, and OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT will search, analyze, and synthesize information from multiple online sources including text, images, and PDFs to generate a comprehensive report at a research analyst’s level, OpenAI said.

“It accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours,” the company stated.

Early Stage with Limitations

OpenAI acknowledged that Deep Research is still in its early development phase and has certain limitations.

“It may struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors and currently shows weakness in confidence calibration, often failing to convey uncertainty accurately,” OpenAI cautioned.

The tool became available on Sunday through the web version of ChatGPT, with plans to expand access to mobile and desktop apps later in February.

Second AI Agent This Year

Deep Research is OpenAI’s second AI agent introduced in 2025. In January, the company previewed “Operator,” a tool designed to assist with various tasks such as creating to-do lists and vacation planning.

OpenAI continues to advance AI-driven automation, aiming to streamline research and task management through its latest innovations.
