‘Only 4% of Breast Cancer Cases Diagnosed Early in Pakistan’
News Desk
Islamabad: During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, oncologist Dr. Hadia Aziz, Medical Consultant at CDA Islamabad Hospital, emphasized the urgent need to break stigma, raise awareness, and ensure early detection of breast cancer in Pakistan, where only 4% of cases are diagnosed at stage one.
Dr. Aziz highlighted that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates, making awareness and timely screening vital. She urged women not to remain silent and to seek prompt medical attention if they notice any warning signs.
Common symptoms of breast cancer include lumps in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or inversion, and persistent breast pain. Immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is essential if any of these symptoms are observed.

Precautionary measures include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, balanced diet, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, performing monthly self-examinations, and undergoing regular clinical check-ups and mammograms, particularly for women over 40 or with a family history of breast cancer.
Dr. Aziz noted that despite rising cases, stigma and fear still prevent many women from seeking timely treatment. She urged society to support open conversations, reduce misconceptions, and empower women to prioritize their health.
