Oddball Christmas Songs That Steal the Show
News Desk
Islamabad: Each holiday season serves as a reminder that certain offbeat Christmas melodies hold a special place in our hearts, even though not all of them resonate with many personally.
Jose Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” feels a bit too repetitive, and Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” is a tough listen despite being from a Beatle. However, amidst the oddities, there are hidden gems.
Take “Jingle Bells,” for instance. It’s a classic, but when you delve into the lyrics, it’s surprisingly about a guy having a joyride with a lady in a horse-drawn sleigh.
The verses even hint at a more risqué side, especially considering the time it was written in 1850. Rumored to be a drinking song, it’s evolved into countless versions, with Bing Crosby’s rendition being one of the most memorable for me.
Then there’s “Snoopy’s Christmas,” a song that introduces Snoopy as a fighter pilot facing the Red Baron during World War 1. While the concept of Snoopy in this role is peculiar, the song’s catchy chorus drew me in. It weaves a fictional tale of goodwill amidst conflict, reminiscent of the Christmas Truce of 1914, although historical accuracy might not entirely match the song’s narrative.
“The Little Drummer Boy” is another favorite, with its touching lyrics recounting a humble boy offering his drumming skills to the newborn King. Despite lacking grand gifts like the Magi, the boy’s heartfelt performance resonates, capturing the essence of Christmas in a simple yet profound moment.
These oddball Christmas tunes bring their own charm and unique stories to the holiday season. We wish all Gazette readers a Merry Christmas from this quirky columnist.
