Islamabad: A nutritionist on Thursday emphasized incorporating spinach, a green leafy vegetable, into a routine diet, which is a valuable component of overall health and well-being.
Dr Sadia Batool, in an interview with a private news channel, highlighted spinach’s recognition as a nutritional powerhouse, emphasizing its diverse benefits, spanning eye health, skin radiance, bone health, blood pressure regulation, and exercise recovery.
She underscored the significance of lutein and zeaxanthin in spinach, noting their role in the retina as a natural filter for blue light and combatting free radicals. Dr Batool discussed the protective mechanisms that could potentially reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), particularly in enhancing vision for individuals dealing with AMD.
Regarding skin health, Dr Batool emphasized spinach’s contribution of essential vitamins and antioxidants, promoting healthier and more vibrant skin tones. The high vitamin K content in spinach, as per Dr Batool, plays a crucial role in supporting bone health. She referred to studies linking increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, to improved skin health and a radiant complexion.
Dr Batool suggested that regular consumption of spinach and other green vegetables could enhance bone mass, acting as a potential safeguard against osteoporosis. Addressing blood pressure regulation, she explained how naturally occurring nitrates in spinach, combined with those in beets and arugula, may contribute to lowering blood pressure.
