Islamabad: The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) takes its social responsibility seriously and has aligned all its core functions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and our Climate Action Plan is a critical step in creating a significant impact, said NUST Pro-Rector Research, Innovation & Commercialization Dr Rizwan Riaz.

On Thursday, NUST hosted the first-ever Partnership for Climate Action (2023) conference titled “Science for Sustainability” in Islamabad.

It was jointly organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft for Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German Red Cross, the Pakistan Red Crescent, the International Federation of Red Cross, the International Rescue Committee, and Welt Hungerhilfe.

The main goal was to unite and link youth, academics, and other stakeholders in order to forge significant alliances for tackling climate change concerns.

The conference gave NUST the chance to present its climate-resilient technology for possible commercialization and deployment, as well as to work closely with stakeholders from the government and development sector to hasten the transition to a sustainable future.

The NUST is actively involved in creating cutting-edge technology and tools to solve the concerns of climate change, Dr Rizwan Riaz said. He also emphasised the significance of the ‘Partnership for Climate Action’, a forum for exchanging best practises, working together on fresh projects, and using combined resources to advance.

The three-day event included youth activities, expert panel discussions, a conference, an exhibition, the launch of the Climate Action Plan, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The NUST Research Directorate has developed a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions both inside and outside of the university and to lessen the effects of climate change.

The conference discussed national and international root causes of climate change and actions to overcome the challenges by promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable transportation. It also focused on the role of academia in climate resilience and sustainable development, the importance of green land, establishing energy-efficient measures, ensuring net zero campus waste, and implementing of renewable energy generation plan.
