Gwadar/Sargodha/Lahore/DI Khan: A spell of dense winter fog has triggered a series of deadly road accidents across Pakistan, leaving at least 26 people dead and dozens injured, authorities said on Saturday.
In the most recent incident, at least nine passengers were killed and several others injured when a passenger bus overturned on the Makran Coastal Highway near Gwadar early Saturday morning. Police said the bus was traveling from Karachi to Jiwani when poor visibility caused by thick fog led the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) Aslam confirmed that nine passengers died on the spot, while the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals. Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash.
Meanwhile, the death toll from another fog-related accident in Sargodha rose to 14 after more injured victims succumbed to their wounds. The accident occurred in the Kot Momin area when dense fog reduced visibility, causing a truck carrying 23 passengers to plunge into the dry Ghala Pur Bangla canal, according to Rescue 1122.

Seven passengers were crushed beneath the vehicle and died on the spot, while seven others later died at the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital. Among the deceased were six children and five women. Officials said the passengers were traveling to attend a funeral.
Punjab has been experiencing persistent dense fog, significantly reducing visibility on highways and urban roads, particularly during early morning and nighttime hours. Authorities warned that the weather conditions have made driving extremely hazardous and urged motorists to slow down and exercise caution.
In Lahore, one person was killed and two others critically injured on Friday when their motorcycle collided with a stationary tractor-trolley during heavy fog on Gurumangat Road in the Gulberg area. Police identified the deceased as M. Wasi, while the injured were named as Abdul Razzaq and Abdul Hadi.

Earlier this week, another fatal accident occurred in Dera Ismail Khan, where two people were killed and 14 others injured in a collision between a sugar-laden trailer and a passenger van on the Indus Highway near Basti Dawana, within the limits of Taunsa Sharif.
According to reports, the trailer was traveling from Rahim Yar Khan to Kohat, while the van was en route from Rammak to Multan. A tractor-trolley loaded with sugarcane was parked along the roadside, and severely reduced visibility due to fog caused the trailer to collide head-on with the oncoming van while attempting to overtake.
Authorities have reiterated appeals to motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy fog, maintain safe speeds, use fog lights, and observe all safety precautions to prevent further loss of life.
