Islamabad: New Zealand stormed into a commanding position in the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a comprehensive 61-run victory over Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, as a late batting surge and a clinical bowling display proved decisive.

Defending 168-7, the Blackcaps produced a disciplined all-round performance to bundle out Sri Lanka for 107-8 in their allotted 20 overs, leaving the hosts reeling after a disastrous start.

Pace spearhead Matt Henry set the tone immediately, clean bowling Pathum Nissanka with the very first delivery of the innings. He struck again in his next over, dismissing Charith Asalanka for five, as Sri Lanka slumped to 6-2 inside three overs.

Attempts to rebuild through Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake were short-lived. Rachin Ravindra shifted the momentum firmly in New Zealand’s favour by removing both batters — Mendis for 11 off 22 balls and Rathnayake for 10 — before also accounting for skipper Dasun Shanaka (3) and Dushan Hemantha (3) in a devastating spell that broke the backbone of the chase.

At 59-6, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble. Kamindu Mendis offered resistance with a brisk 31 off 23 deliveries, striking four boundaries, while Dunith Wellalage contributed 29 from 23 balls, including two fours and a six. However, Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips ensured there was no late revival, as wickets continued to tumble.

Sri Lanka’s innings eventually closed at 107-8, with Maheesh Theekshana unbeaten on one and Dushmantha Chameera adding seven.

Earlier, New Zealand had recovered impressively from a middle-order wobble to post a competitive total. Openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen provided early momentum with a 30-run stand before Theekshana removed Allen for a quickfire 23. Chameera then dismissed Seifert for eight, reducing the visitors to 34-2.

Glenn Phillips and Ravindra steadied the innings, but Sri Lanka’s bowlers clawed back through Chameera and Theekshana. Phillips fell for 18, Ravindra for a fluent 32, and Mark Chapman departed for a duck, leaving New Zealand struggling at 84-5.

Daryl Mitchell’s dismissal for three further compounded the pressure.

The turning point came through a crucial counter-attacking partnership between skipper Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie. The duo rebuilt patiently before accelerating in the death overs, stitching together a vital half-century stand.

Santner led the charge with a powerful 47 off 26 balls, smashing two fours and four sixes, while McConchie added 31 off 23 deliveries, including three boundaries and two sixes. Their late surge lifted New Zealand past the 150-run mark and ultimately beyond Sri Lanka’s reach.

The emphatic win not only boosted New Zealand’s net run rate but also underscored their depth and composure under pressure as the tournament heads toward its knockout phase.
