New York’s New Mayor Looks Pakistani? Internet Thinks So!

Islamabad:  Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has become a social media sensation in Pakistan — not only for his historic victory but also for his striking resemblance to popular Pakistani actors.

Soon after Mamdani’s win, Pakistani users flooded social media with posts comparing him to actors Junaid Khan and Arsalan Naseer, sparking a wave of humorous reactions and memes.

Responding to a viral post highlighting the resemblance, Junaid Khan joked about expecting special treatment on his next visit to New York. “Hopefully will get some VIP treatment when in New York next,” he wrote on X.

Meanwhile, actor Arsalan Naseer also joined the fun, replying to a fan’s comment with mock seriousness: “Yeah, guys, it’s true, he is my cousin.” He later added humorously, “Congrats, Pakistan, we now have a cousin as NYC mayor.”

Mamdani, who made history as the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City, has drawn widespread attention for his progressive politics and immigrant background.

The 34-year-old politician was born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin and moved to the United States at the age of seven. He became a naturalized US citizen in 2018 and is known for his advocacy on housing justice, immigrant rights, and social equality.

While Mamdani’s victory is being celebrated globally as a milestone for diversity in US. politics, in Pakistan, it has also inspired lighthearted pride — and a search for his “celebrity cousins.”
